What to Read and Watch Before Hiking the Camino de Santiago

Have you heard of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain? Historically, spiritual pilgrims have followed the path that Saint James took across the country (well, technically, from wherever they lived). These days, people walk the camino for all sorts of reasons. I've been scheming to make my own camino happen someday in the sort-of-near future. Perhaps, I'll see you on the way in Fall 2018. Buen Camino!

Best Books to Read Before Hiking the Camino de Santiago

The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho. Before there were travel bloggers, there were travel authors. Coelho wrote this book in 1987 and subsequently sent thousands of pilgrims in his wake. It gives a glimpse at the spiritual hardship and transformative trail magic many find on the camino.

Field of Stars by Kevin Codd. This book is often sited as a favorite book of pilgrims walking the camino. It's a highly spiritual account and is sure to be a meaningful read.

Buen Camino by Natasha and Peter Murtagh. This is a cowritten book by a father and daughter duet who set out on the Camino together. My journey may look similar in both route, length and potentially even walking partner.

A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino de Santiago: The Way of St. James by John Brierley. This is the most well-renowned practical guide to the camino that I've come across. I'm going to trust the pilgrims that have walked ahead of me and refer to this guide often.

The Way of the Stars: Journeys on the Camino de Santiago by Robert Sibley. Can you tell that personal accounts on the camino are my jam? This one follows Sibley as he makes the five-hundred-mile trek. Twice. He also has a special way of describing the sights and sounds of the camino. I almost feel like I've already begun my journey.

What to Watch Before Hiking the Camino de Santiago

The Way I might not even know about the Camino de Santiago without this movie. It follows a man on his pilgrimage, shortly after his son has passed away. It's an inspiring and heartwarming take on the walk.

Camino Ways Podcast I'm firmly on the podcast train and my camino education can only be helped by that. This podcast is a short and snappy guide.

What am I missing? Help me prepare for the way.
