Seven Days of Us: A Novel by Francesca Hornak

I listened to this quippy, heartfelt family dramady on a redeye from LAX to Michigan for Thanksgiving. If that isn’t enough proof of this book’s worth on your holiday bookshelf, consider that it’s set at Christmas and about grown children gathering for a week of weak wifi and familial proximity. Sounds like a great holiday break book to me.

The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman

Raise your hand if you’re a fan of epic, century-long sagas. This one spans 250 years and generations of Massachusetts settlers, capturing a sense of home and family. It’s mystical and magical, though not explicitly holiday themed.

Cork Dork by Bianca Bosker

Wine anyone? I know I could usually use a glass after a few days of the “anyone special?” questions. If you’re at all interested in the intricate, ludicrous and exclusive wine world, let Bianca be your guide. Bonus recommendation: Watch Somm on Netflix as a read-along. You’ll love this funny and lighthearted take.

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

I love the premise of this book. One day, four teenage siblings discover the date of each of their deaths. Each sibling responds and reacts to the news in vividly different ways. Follow their lives as they wrestle with accepting fate or invoking change. The beautiful cover art doesn’t hurt either!

Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal

I promise this one isn’t just for my fellow Midwesterners! Warning: this book may give you one more reason to eat this holiday season (which makes an excellent book for this list of best holiday break books). When a man’s wife leaves him to raise their daughter on his own, he’s determined to pass on his love of food to her. As she grows, she finds peace in each ingredient. A unique and heartwarming read.

You’ll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein

If going home for the holidays gives you flashbacks of your self-conscious, awkward self, pick up this essay series. A hilarious and sharp look at what it’s like to grow into your skin as a 21st century woman.

What books are you reading this holiday season?
